ATS resume format for freshers in India (2026)

An ATS scans your resume, pulls out your contact details, work history, education and skills, and scores how well they match the job. Large Indian employers and consultancies run thousands of applications through this filter.

If your resume uses tables, columns, images or unusual headings, the parser often reads it as garbled text, and a garbled resume scores near zero.

• Single column. No tables, text boxes, or multi-column layouts.
• Standard section headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects.
• A common font (Calibri, Arial) at 10–12pt. No graphics or photos.
• Save and send as a .docx or text-based .pdf, never a scanned image.
• Put your name, email and phone as plain text at the very top, not in the header/footer.

No internship experience yet? A 'Projects' section with real coursework or self-built projects works just as well for freshers.

Recruiters and ATS both reward measurable impact. Use the formula: strong action verb + what you did + the result with a number.

Weak: 'Responsible for managing social media.' Strong: 'Grew the college fest Instagram from 400 to 2,100 followers in six weeks.' The second one has a verb and a number, the first has neither.

An ATS matches the words in your resume to the words in the job description. If the JD says 'lead generation' and your resume says 'finding customers', the match is weak.

Read the job post, list its key skills, and make sure the exact terms appear naturally in your resume. Do not stuff keywords, but do speak the recruiter's language.
